Why We Shouldn’t Take Health Food So Seriously

Let’s face it, my friends. Health food is part of popular culture. It has its trends. Whether it’s promoting the replacement of a food (“You should be drinking rice milk! No. Wait. That’s all carbohydrate. You should definitely be drinking soy milk. Never mind, it’s loaded with estrogen and possibly genetically-modified. Ok, almond milk is definitely the way to go! Hmm…it’s sprayed with pesticides. I definitely think organic dairy is amazing! It’s all the rage!”) or touting the benefits of a specific superfood (Acai berries are amazing! They make you skinny and boost your sex drive! I put them on everything!), the world of health food has as many trends as Paris in the springtime.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not knocking the benefits of acai berries or saying that certain milk replacements aren’t beneficial. (I’ve recently discovered cashew milk and find it to be a great afternoon pick-me-up). However, the media perpetuates a myth that your health is dependent on a specific food. Your health is not destroyed by neglecting a certain food, nor is it radically changed by the consumption of one so-called “superfood”.

I have to make a confession: I don’t like fish and I hate kale. While I need to be cognizant of my omega-3 intake due to this preference, it has not destroyed my health. All whole foods are superfoods. They work together to keep us healthy. So don’t worry if you don’t love quinoa! Focus on a diet rich in whole, natural foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean (preferably organic) meats, healthy oils, and low-fat dairy (if desired)). Just like the classic little black dress, they never go out of style.
